Suicide remains one of the most urgent global public health challenges of our time. Worldwide, it is the third leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29, with an estimated 720,000 to 740,000 lives lost each year.

Many suicides occur impulsively during periods of intense emotional distress. Financial pressures, relationship conflicts, bullying, chronic pain, illness, loneliness, and unresolved trauma can all contribute to a breaking point. In such moments, when the ability to manage life’s stresses weakens, young people may feel trapped, hopeless, and alone.

Recognizing this urgent need, the Victory Youth Group Fiji (VYG) established the HELP Project—an outreach initiative dedicated to supporting young people who are silently suffering. The HELP Project provides practical and emotional assistance to those struggling with depression, anxiety, bullying, loneliness, and suicidal thoughts.

The VYG HELP Project, offers a safe, non-judgmental space where young people can speak openly about their struggles. Its mission is to be a listening ear and a source of hope for youth facing mental health challenges or personal trauma.

A key strength of the HELP Project lies in its outreach approach.

Many volunteers have personally overcome similar challenges, allowing them to connect with those in need and share messages of hope and resilience. Outreach takes place in communities, schools, public spaces, and online, ensuring help is accessible.

The project also provides practical resources, including 24-hour helplines, social media support, and in-person counseling at local VYG branches. It organizes special events such as the “MEGA-HELP” event to raise awareness, showcase support services, and encourage young people to seek help without fear or shame.

Its message is clear: there is support available, there is understanding, and there is always hope.
